Gertrudes Childrens Hospital

"Quality health care for children"

0 Reviews

Description:

Gertrude's Garden Children's Hospital was founded in 1947, with the donation of some land by Colonel Ewart Grogan, pioneer extraordinary, in memory of his beloved wife, Gertrude Edith.

As the years go by, Gertrude's hospital has becomes more and more of a 'giving' hospital. It has. won prestigious awards for its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Gertrude's from the beginning was and will always be a simple hospital: it now has completed the full circle by becoming a place of hope for sick children who have no expectations elsewhere, which was what Grogan aspired to help the London orphans.

Gertrude's Children's Hospital is a charitable trust, meaning that all profits are ploughed back into the hospital. It is run by a Board of Trustees who offer their services voluntarily in the day-to-day running of the hospital, since they are responsible for all policy decisions. Nor do they receive any rewards or emoluments for the charitable work they do.

Whereas . paying patients provide the main monies for the hospital's routine management, Gertrude's is often reliant on donors for the purchase of the expensive paediatric equipment it requires to remain an up-to-date organisation. Any appeals for funds are almost always for the charitable work to which the hospital is committed.

It is interesting to note that for the recent building extensions, Gertrude's 'went it alone', shouldering the entire expense out of its own investments.Gertrude's officially marked its Diamond Jubilee on 8th. April 2008. This celebration fittingly marked the formal opening of the new Outpatients Department, inclusive of the Accidents & Emergency unit and the Doctors' Plaza.

For an organisation that began sixty years ago with a small staff and only sixteen beds, this was a significant occasion, as Gertrude's is now able to offer a genuine one-stop paediatric centre that can provide almost every available treatment that a child might need. It was indeed a fitting time to remember with thanks all those who have subscribed in the past, and those who continue to do so into the future, to create this unique centre of paediatric excellence in Sub-Sahara Africa.

    Saving The Last Dance

I teach Ballet at a Kindergarten in Lavington and last year we had a production of the nut cracker and the kids were super excited.

Unfortunately, a few minutes into the Ballet, one of the Kids Pipper, felt drowsy and passed out back stage. I was so worried.

The headmistress however was very calm and we drove Pipper to the Gertrudes Childrens Clinic at Lavington. All the while I was very fidgety.

The service we received can only be termed as excellent. One of the nurses reassured as and even organised for a hot cup of tea while the doctor ( who came in amazingly fast) attended to Pipper.

Before long, we could hear Pipper chuckling and when she came out she had a pink hippo doll under her arm. All well now she was discharged. No long queues, no waiting for doctors from other hospitals, no nasty hospital experience that kids dread.

In all the rush we had forgotten to bring some money along and amazingly enough, the hospital made arrangements so we could settle the bill later.

If it wasnt for these guys I dont think I would still have a job.... Ohh and Pipper made it in time for the final act and insisted on doing it :)

    Professional & Efficient

We took our 6 month old baby to the hospital after she started getting high fevers and sleepless nights for quite sometime. We had tried everything...Nothing worked. We had been to other hospitals when one of our friends who is a local suggested the Gertrude's.

Our child was diagnosed with a disease that normally affects infants and if not caught early enough, id life threatening.

We received the best care available and am happy to say the baby is now fully recovered.

I definitely wish all facilities and services in Kenya could learn from this hospital.

    In Sickness & In Health

One does not expect to associate illness with good childhood memories, but as a child, a huge part of my life was actually spent at this hospital, the Susan ward in particular and this facility made the pains of being ill the last thing on my mind.

A broken arm here, a bleeding nose there. I used to suffer from chronic bronchitis and asthma and so at least every 2 weeks I had to ' drop by'.

The staff were always very helpful and the care I received was priceless. Doctors always on call, special arrangement were always made so that my worried mother could be by my side.

The hospital was always spotlessly clean and never had that sickly 'hospital smell' that most facilities have hanging around. The play ground and toys made all of us sick children forget our illnesses and just be kids.

Fast forward to last year and my niece was suddenly taken ill at an ungodly hour. I was glad to know there was a Gertrude's clinic close to where I live and the standards were top notch just like the headquarters.

I would like to say a big 'asante sana' to the hospital, the staff and everyone in general on behalf of both myself and my niece. If the hospital needs volunteers or donations (not that I have that much to give) I would be more than glad to chip in.

If only it admitted adults too :)
