Total Office Solutions
Uptown Products for Downtown Prices
The worst thing about running a small business is that no matter how much you try to save on costs, at times you end up making big mistakes. I run a small Cyber business in 'downtown' Nairobi and for the longest time I kept buying cheap ink refillas for my printers and copiers. Then the copiers break down and there is always leaking and a jam and I got tired of all this River Road nonsense. So when I finally made some pesa, I went 'uptown' bought a 'new ' copier and original toners for the same just to test it. Well cheap is expensive, I found out that Total office solutions price differed only slightly with the 'china' products I was buying huko chini and these were original! So I try them out for a while, then one time I order for a particular catridge and its not there. The assistant tells me to leave my number and they will call me when the bring it from the other branch.. me am thinking.. this is just biashara talk, they wont call me. Then, at quarter to three just when am debating going back to my River Road guy, these guys actually call me and I go pick up my catridge. That was very impressive. At this rate am begining to think maybe 'Downtown' is not as cheap as it sounds -

The Cost of Being A Boss
If you are looking to drink cheap liqueur, go blind and sleep in a ditch.. Dont visit the Lounge. In fact, stop thinking about it! This is a place for decent folk, people with proper manners and etiquette. No shouting matches between some guy who just got a salary advance and the waiter, no banging of tables asking for service. This is the place you come to unwind and enjoy a nice easy evening or night. THATS WHY ITS A LOUNGE. I like that they offer drinks that no other place stocks ( who has bitters, the good Irish kind) and also their food is amazing, I feel this place deserves more props than any other in Nairobi. Finally as the previous reviewer pointed out, parking... isnt an issue! -

Couches Looking Like New
Ok I will be the first to admit, at times money is very tight and with the rise in fuel and food prices its getting pretty tricky juggling stuff. So I have these couches that I inherited from my parents, really good but after seating 2 generations, they kind of got a bit dog eared. Dilema, do I get new seats and starve or do I keep looking ruggedy. So a friend suggests I get a fundi who will upholster the old seat. Great idea, my worry is, the original material looked so good, I wanted to keep it but then these seats are from the 70's so no such luck! Or at least I thought so till a friend pointed out that there is a small place on Mombasa Road where he bought his carpet and they also had upholstery material. So worth a shot, we go in and Immediately the young lady opens the upholstery book, I sight the exact material for my seats. How uncanny! The long and short of it? Everyone thinks I have new seats he he he , take that economic downturn! -

No Thats worth Every Penny!
The worst thing about good food is that at a restaurant they never serve a portion that is directly proportional to the money you are paying. Well am glad to announce thats not the case at the TOC as its popularly known. Right down from the starters, I ordered a won-ton soup came pipping hot and the volume was very generous... My mound of honey glazed ribs was a miniature mountain of goodness and when finally the mains came..... I had to call out " Jitesh! Please dont kill me with Food!" as it was indeed a half duck, marinated, and grilled to perfection..... The service was quite good given the fact that the place was at bursting point with patrons and the kitchen was working at full blast. Either way you couldnt notice the wait, what with the proprietor walking about sharing jokes and recommending meals. This is definitely a comeback place! -

Re-doing The Kitchen
Sarah & I had just scrapped through and bought a new place (ok sort of new) last year but the whole thing was falling apart.. Especially the kitchen. It's an old colonial style house and the termites had done quite a number on the wooden floor and cabinets in the kitchen. Finally, at after speaking to a friend and full of worry (coz I dint have much money left after buying the house) We paid a visit to PG Bison. I must say it was very intimidating at first just from the look of the place. It dint look like I could afford it. However, the staff was so welcoming and the attendant so helpful, I finally realised that perhaps, I could just scrape enough through. To cut a long story short, I have a new kitchen and Sarah is very happy..... The floors are to die for and the kitchen never looked better.
