Que Pasa
Karen, Nairobi, Kenya
Keeping Their Cool
The most unfortunate thing about new restaurants or eateries in Nairobi is that as soon as the place proves to be the least bit popular, hordes of Nairobian’s swarm the joint and before you know it, it becomes run down the service goes to the dogs and then the same Nairobians abandon the place. Just like Locust! Am pleased to announce that the management of Que Pasa seems to have countered this problem by proper planning, training and generally good sense. I first visited the place last year during the lunch hour period. The ambience is so appealing, very simple yet mind blowing. The service was up to scratch and the manager, one miss Wambui even walked around to find out if we were well. A couple of weeks ago we went back during the evening and though the place was jam packed, the service was still great. We even got our pizza order taken and served within 10 minutes. Quite impressive given the huge crowd that was there and it was just on Thursday. Parking is a bit of a concern but most of the patrons are willing to squeeze one more car next to theirs and the party spills onto the parking lot if the weather allows it. We have gone back again and again and though the crowd seems to grow each time, these guys know how to hold their own. They have an impressive wine list and you even have that custom brewed beer that everyone is raving about if that’s your thing. Finally I must say they put up quite an effort transforming the Duka into the kick ass restaurant it is and all the old photos on the walls and barrel table close to the bar give it a nostalgic feel.... So next time some lost Mexican asks “Que Pasa Hombre...” I know what to say Que Pasa Hommes! -

Uchumi Supermarkets
Come back Kings
Now Uchumi have been around for ages and the news that the company was going under (even before the recesssion hit ) was very worrying. Am glad that early this month they sprung back up onto the stock exchange listing...However, maybe they can use some of that new money to clean the aisles and get better lighting and a fresh coat of paint for the store. It is only right that great and helpful staff members like Okoth of the Uchumi at Aga Khan walk, work in an environment that supports their character. Otherwise... bring on the low prices!!!! -

Mercury Lounge
Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya
Mature Crowd, Great Food, Excellent Night
Partying in Nairobi is a nightmare! Try going to wetlands on a Saturday and by the time you get to the club, it's already morning and the roads look like a parking lot. Am however glad to announce for those who wish to have a great evening out, head on to the Mercury Lounge at ABC place. The setting is cool and mature, no slutty girls sitting around trying to poison your drinks. The service is superb and they have great biting and proper food if you are feeling perkish. The music is good and mellow and well balanced so your ear drums don't have to take a vacation. Parking is much more secure and the selection of drinks and cocktails is to die for. Let it be known, the days of 'rioting' are done! Do it big and party like a legend, calm cool and mature -

My iLife Renewed
I must say as a user of Apple products, the worst risk you can take is taking your brand new Mac book Air for an update to your local "fundi" only for you to return and get told that the laptop "imekufa" Lucky for me though, my Mac Book still had its warranty and I made a trip to Peponi Plaza where a welcoming hand and a warm cup of tea later, I was informed that my Mac book was not dead and it was good as new. Asante sana Elite, as an authorized reseller I know better than to go fishing around the Fundis in my estate. -

Battle Los Angeles
Cool Special effects, Nice Filming Location, Weak Plot
The one thing about an Alien movies is that they need to blow your mind with the imagination on the directors part. The Alien should look out of this world! This movie dint even show the aliens. It looked like an Iraq war movie only this time the Jihadist are Aliens and you dont even get to see them. WTF. So there is a soldier who is going into retirement he cant even jog too well to begin with and before you know it, he his kicking Alien Ass. The saving grace of this movie is that the special effects were really good and the film locations were Killer, The movie Trailer poster has that scene where the surfers are getting attacked. Now that was a good scene. The acting was ok and perhaps the director could do with a little..eehhhh FILM SCHOOLING! I recommend you go watch it if you are into military, combat stuff not really Sci Fi. -

Ranalo Foods Ltd
City Centre, Nairobi, Kenya
Eat Till You Say ...TOSHA
I dint know this place started out as a small eatery till I read the 1st review. Well Am pleased to announce that of all places that purport to serve traditional African food, this place actually does serve Traditional African food. Mounds upon mounds of steaming Ugali..... Deep Fried Fish and Quail meat, More mounds of Ugali... Then there are the live bands and the Kachumbari and coconut fish and stewed bananas. Nyama Choma ...and more mounds of Ugali. I swear to God I can devour the mounds of Ugali for days on end. The portions are well worth every cent and the ambiance is really great save for the music system being too loud when a live band is playing., The crowd is cosmopolitan and the street parking relatively safe and you can stagger away from the spot ( because of good food and drink) knowing full well you are truly in KENYA! -

Eldon Villas
Ngong, Nairobi, Kenya
True To Their Word
With Apartments springing up at every corner, it is an embarrassment what some of 'state of the art' apartments are offering. Poor establishments, laughable services, cheap furniture and mediocre amenities for exorbitant fees. Here again am forced to use my favorite word...Highway Robbery. BUT I Digress..... The Eldon Villas offers exactly what they promise. The linen was fresh, the utensils were actually the good kind, none of that cheap stuff that corrodes after two washes. The staff were friendly and helpful and my parking spot was always reserved just for me and not the garbage truck (unlike some place I stayed a while back. Although the internet is not wireless, I have to say it is super fast and there is always someone on call to help you ( Like when you lose your keys at mid night after a rather randy night out in Nairobi...asante sana to the caretaker.. I was almost taking my shirt off to break down the door) Finally, it is actually nice to swim in a pool that is clean and does not mimic a swamp. I do hope they start accepting credit cards soon though. -

Thai Chi
City Centre, Nairobi, Kenya
Me I love It Long Time....
To be quite honest, when my girlfriend said she was taking me to Thai Chi for my birthday, I thought it was either some fancy new Kamasutra position or ( and preferably ) a strip club...... Shock on Me! Although it was a bit of a come down when we got there ( because I had enough loose change to make it rain) I was in for a pleasant surprise. The setting and decor is very warm and cozy and especially inviting. The staff have very tasteful uniforms and even better attitude which I must say is very rear in Nairobi. Because I was super hungry, the food all came at once... Stuffed chicken wings, the dry red curry fish and the coconut rice was to die for. While not as entertaining as some girl named Cinnamon swinging down a pole, the waiter at our table was very very engaging and entertaining, letting as know bits of this about the Thai food and culture and he was indeed very knowledgeable. At the end of the day, I left feeling very full and happy and with none of the guilt that accompanies you spending 300 quid for a lap dance. If anything, I think our waiter earned all the loose 50's I had on me. A definite hit -

Mister Wok
South C, Nairobi, Kenya
Ohh Hail Mister Wok
I happened to come across a takeaway menu from Mr. Wok at the office a few days back just before quitting time and I swear I was hypnotized. Just reading out the food.... wonton chicken soup with spinach.....chicken wraps...... sauteed chicken strips....ohhh wee my mouth waters even now. So on my way home I made a detour for Capital Center. It was just as I pictured... the ambience is cool and oriental, but I wasnt there for the ambience or the nice oriental instrumental music flowing.....AGENDA- FOOD. Ohh the service was LKarate swift, I ordered my Chicken Spinach Soup..it came fast and hot... And being the hungry bloke I was I added appetizers chicken strips...oh yeah, nice crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside.. onto my mains...all this was coming in such good time I actually stopped to say a big thanks to the waiter for his perfect timing. The main course of beef in oyster sauce was super with my chowmein. As I staggered home (on account of good food & a lighter wallet and not on account of Sake) I tacked my take away left overs under my armpits.. relishing the thought of Chinese in the morning for breakfast. Oh hail Mister Wok! -

Gertrudes Childrens Hospital
In Sickness & In Health
One does not expect to associate illness with good childhood memories, but as a child, a huge part of my life was actually spent at this hospital, the Susan ward in particular and this facility made the pains of being ill the last thing on my mind. A broken arm here, a bleeding nose there. I used to suffer from chronic bronchitis and asthma and so at least every 2 weeks I had to ' drop by'. The staff were always very helpful and the care I received was priceless. Doctors always on call, special arrangement were always made so that my worried mother could be by my side. The hospital was always spotlessly clean and never had that sickly 'hospital smell' that most facilities have hanging around. The play ground and toys made all of us sick children forget our illnesses and just be kids. Fast forward to last year and my niece was suddenly taken ill at an ungodly hour. I was glad to know there was a Gertrude's clinic close to where I live and the standards were top notch just like the headquarters. I would like to say a big 'asante sana' to the hospital, the staff and everyone in general on behalf of both myself and my niece. If the hospital needs volunteers or donations (not that I have that much to give) I would be more than glad to chip in. If only it admitted adults too :) -

Exchange Bar, The - The Sarova Stanley
City Centre, Nairobi, Kenya
2 Thumbs Up ( Wish I had more thumbs)
A while back( about 6 years back) While visiting The Stanley with a friend I had a rather nasty experience in racial profiling, so going back to the Stanley I braced myself for the same. I was in for a pleasant surprise. Right from the Doorman to the Askari who asked us in the politest of terms to step through the metal detector this place has gone through a complete transformation. The ambience in the lobby is cool and quiet music flows through out. The staff were very helpful to point out the best seating at the Exchange Bar and the Bar keep welcomed us with the warmest of smiles. The plush seating and padded carpeting makes this the perfect place to have a quiet drink and clear your head away from the bustle and deafening music that has come to trademark bars around the city. They have a wide range of drinks and for the adventurers, the cocktails are a must try. A smoking and non-smoking area is quite thoughtful and as you sip your brandy while nodding away to the sounds of Nut King Cole and Johnny Mathers, you know you will be making a return visit. Perhaps one area where they would want to improve is the closing hours. Surely 9pm is quite early to close down a bar. But per-chance its to go with the old adage...all good things come to an end too soon. This is a must visit place whether you are visiting the country or have lived here all your life. -

Moda Kenya Limited
Nairobi, Kenya
Giving Posh A New Meaning
A visit to Moda Kenya is like a trip to a chocolate factory, you are spoilt for choice! These guys stock high-end authentic carpets, rugs, mats and shags ( No not that kind you perves) of all types and sizes. But not to worry the staff are very friendly and helpful especially one Mr. Muhammed. The owner, a jolly Turkish gentleman will indulge you in a cuppa tea and tell you all about the Carpets albeit in laboured english. All in all I did find a great carpet for my Bachelors lair and managed to make very good friend and I wouldnt hesitate to buy another rug, though I was assured the one i got would last me quite a while. Besides stocking carpets they also do have upholstrey material of the highest quality. -

Ryce Ea Ltd
Industrial Area, Nairobi, Kenya
Doing The Right Thing!
Its not often that you find a business that puts its customers first. Ryce motors is one among those few who do the right thing. Leasing a vehicle canbe so hectic, but these guys make it a breeze. They get the model right and even the colour if its available. While leasing I was a bit worried because I was going outta town with the car but their terms were so good even when I informed them I would run a tad late, I was recieved with calm and proper etiquette. My car was thoroughly checked before I left and the periodic call to make sure I was ok made me feel very valued. Keep it up Ryce -

Kicking Ass- Brazilian Style
Three Words...OHH MY GOD! This is the place to stew your bones if you are looking for authentic brazillian cuisine. Where to start. The ambience is amazing, nice even sitting, cool music flowing located at the Viking Place in Westlands. They have an array of wines from around the world and the Management is Top Notch if not world class. Big thanks to Mr. Mauro Chennet for doing such a great job. The service is extra fast and friendly and their uniforms are really cool, pirate like. The FOOD! OHH MY GOD! is the only way to state it. Succulent slices of meat well roasted and wonderful accompaniments. The Bill....OH MY GOD! But well worth it. Free Wi-Fi, Cool desserts. Fellows If you want to get Laid, Take your lady friend there, the food will do it all for you. -

Dormans Ltd
Service People- Leave the Attitude at The Door
To be quite honest, Dormans has the best coffee in Kenya. So they deserve the tag coffee experts. I cant say much about the ambience since its smack at the centre of the lobby at West Gate mall.If you are to go on a date or business meeting am not too sure this is where I would recommend. Either way good coffee is not an excuse for RUDE SERVICE! Our waitress took forever to get to us and even then it seemed we were bothering her. Menus smacked onto the table, and a mean stare communicated that perhaps our need for coffee was detracting her from discovering life on mars or who built the pyramids. The coffee arrived on time albeit flang onto the table, the croissants were rather late in coming and the bill took ages to be processed. Honestly, someone needs to get fired -

The Brew Bistro & Lounge
Nairobi, Kenya
Ambience Amazing, Food Mediocre, Price Highway Robbery
The lounge madness has stricken Nairobi like a plague, but to be fair the Big Five Bistro/Breweries was actually among the 1st to start the idea. Comfy seats, Cool Music and an ambience that is to die for. The Management is great and the service very good. If you are here for the beer and tapas you are in for a treat. But woe onto you if you are here to dine. The dining section while looking extremly swanky doesnt compensate for the fare. The portions are attrociously small and the bill astronomically huge. I felt as though I had been robbed and infact went ahead to check my person for injuries. The burger was baby fist sized and the chips came from 1 potatoe. For all my trouble I hobbled away knowing I shouldnt have to pa y that much just to sit in a nice place. I know class has a price but not an entire stimulous bail out package! -

Taste Of China
Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya
Wonderful Homely Feel
I happened to have been at the restaurant when a gentleman was proposing to his lady friend. What can I say? The owners (Mr.& Mrs. Lakhani) went all out to make sure that would be the most memorable night of the couples lives( well except for the wedding night of course ..he he.) Tehy prepared special dessert at no cost, made the whole proposal set up and finally gave the happy couple ( soon to be miserable man and grumpy old hag) a complementary bottle of wine. The food is amazing, the portions well worth the money and though the place is a tad small, it has the homely feel and the owners make you extra comfortable. The pottly gentleman cracking jokes and recommending meals, the lady Dotting over you like the elder sister you never had and the staff looking ohh so spiffy in their dark uniforms and quiet but Kung Fu like efficiency. It does get a tad noisy with woks banging and orders issued in the kitchen but not to worry the relaxing chinese instrumental music will drown away the din. Dont worry all you vegans, they have an extensive menu for you and if you ask extra nice, they will make something off the menu extra special for you. -

Onami Grill & Sushi Bar
Upping the Game
First off the ambience is amazing, a mix of eastern and western decor, but mostly eastern. Their famous Thursday Nighters are a'tad too famous' as most time the place is packed to capacity. I personally feel the staff can do with a bit more training but besides that I feel the Management is doing exceptionally well. I recommend it
